The bulk of Fire Technology courses are three units and meet once a week over the course of WLAC's regular 15- or 16-week semester.

Our Teachers

Classes are taught by faculty who are trained service firefighters.

Charles Stapleton, Chairperson

Professor Stapleton has served the Los Angeles community in law enforcement for over 30 years. During that period, his assignments included uniform patrol, assistant watch commander, public relations and an investigator for the Anti-Terrorist Unit.

He has also been a college professor for 30 years at the Los Angeles Community College and here at West Los Angeles College. In addition, he has worked with the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security helping to identify concerns and first responder training needs.

A. McKnight

Professor McKnight is an 18 year veteran of the Los Angeles City Fire Department. He currently works directly for the Chief in the planning section. His prior experience includes working as instructor in the training division and heading the Fire Cadet Academy. He has been with WLAC for over three years.

Ray Shackelford

Dr. Shackelford has been instrumental in the fire service for over 40 years. He began his career as a firefighter and progressed all the way to Chief of the then newly formed Chino Valley Independent Fire District where he served for six years. Dr. Shackelford is widely recognized as a visionary, author, and lecturer. He began his teaching career with CSULA as a part time instructor in 1982. Dr. Shackelford holds a Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from the University of LaVerne.
