The field of Fire Science is an essential service. The demand for professionals in this field will remain high over the next 10 years because many full-time firefighters will be eligible for retirement. WLAC fire science technology graduates not only work for municipal fire departments, but also for airports, private industrial fire protection organizations, insurance companies, and as consultants. The fire science program offered at WLAC focuses on two groups: the pre-service group working toward a two-year degree; and the in-service group looking to advance in a current career. Both groups can take up-to-date courses in a state-of-the-art training facility. This program also offers pre-service students the chance to participate in ride-alongs with local fire departments, where the student can assist with hoses and perform other job functions as permitted by the host department. Fire Technology ClassesThe West LA College Associate Degree and Certificate programs incorporate the standardized Fire Technology curriculum identified by the offices of the California State Chancellor and State Fire Marshal. Elective courses are those developed under the guidelines of related fire service training and educational programs such as CFSTES (California Fire Service Training and Education System), DOT (Department of Transportation), FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency), FSTEP (Fire Service Training and Education Program) and NFA (National Fire Academy). Where to go After WLACAfter completing the coursework at WLAC, students are prepared to take the fire departments' entrance tests and physical agility qualifications.
